    Ingredients

Very simple ingredients are used to make this recipe:

    Ingredients for whipped honey butter.
    • Honey: local honey is always preferred because it is healthiest for your immune system - but any honey works.
      • Maple syrup would be the only alternative I would suggest to use in place of honey.
    • Unsalted butter: unsalted, room temperature butter. Unsalted is best so that you can taste for salt yourself and add as needed, but if you only have salted butter that is fine; just make sure you taste before adding any additional salt.
    • Salt: kosher salt or flaky sea salt.

    Honey 101

Honey is made from bees collecting flower nectar, returning to their hive, then processing it from a sweet liquid into a thick syrup that gets stored in honeycomb.

Honey gets its flavor based on the flower that it got the nectar from. The lighter the honey, the more mild the flavor. For example, buckwheat honey is dark in color, clover honey is medium colored, and wildflower honey is a light golden color.

Raw honey is best if you’re trying to get the full health benefits because it is not processed and therefore still contains the pollen and other naturally occurring substances. For example if you’re trying to lessen the effects of allergies, having honey with the natural pollen can help acclimate your body.

    More on honey here.

How to make whipped honey butter

This easy recipe for homemade honey butter comes together in just a few simple steps.

    Butter whipped in a bowl.

    1. Whip the butter. Add the butter to a large mixing bowl and whip on medium speed for 1-2 minutes.

Honey and salt added to whipped butter.

    2. Add the honey and salt. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the honey and salt and whip on high speed another 2-3 minutes. Taste and add more salt if needed for your preference.

    Tips and tricks

    • Use a shallow bottomed bowl, this will help whip to ensure you get a fluffy butter.
    • You can use an electric hand mixer or stand mixer with the whisk attachment.
    • Butter with a higher butterfat content (typically European butters) will have a richer flavor.
    • Use room temperature /softened butter, it’ll whip more easily.
    • To quickly get butter to room temperature, cut it into chunks and leave it in a sunny spot.
    • If you want, you can add a little bit of cinnamon to make it a whipped cinnamon honey butter.
    • Always taste your food - I think the amount of salt I specified is good, but you can add as much salt as you'd like.

    How to serve

Whipped honey butter is one of those things that elevates any spread. One of my favorite ways to serve it is on a board with jam, bread, a sharp cheese, and radishes. Or serve on the dinner table alongside any meal with some crusty dinner rolls or warm biscuits. You can also slather it on french toast, a fresh warm waffle, buttermilk pancakes, or your morning toast.

    Storage

The best way to store whipped honey butter is in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 5 days. I like to store it in a glass jar because I think it's cute. It'll harden as it sits so if it needs a little re-fluffing just whip it again for a minute or two.

    FAQs

    Can I use vegan butter?

I have never tried whipping vegan butter so I’m not sure you’ll get the same light and fluffy texture, but worth a shot!

How do I know if my butter is properly whipped?

Whipped butter has an airy texture and will also be a paler color than the standard form of butter.

Can I bake with whipped butter?

I don’t recommend it. Since there’s added air whipped in it alters the ability to measure it properly in accordance with baking recipes.
